I sometimes use photography to further challenge the realness of the objects I cast. In that case I destroy the sculpture and the photograph is the final piece. I like the idea that the photograph is one step further removed from the original object, in some way the ‘trace of the trace’. We are left uncertain as to the true nature of the final image, just as we are uncertain as to the true nature of reality.
For the ‘Epithelium/A Fleur de Peau ‘ series, I use my favorite medium as a screen, a veil, that reveals as much as it hides and protects. My camera catches the silhouettes and the colours of the flowers behind the sensual skin-like membrane. The haziness of the contours evokes Leonardo da Vinci’s sfumato. The flowers also look like body tissue or organs being viewed through a microscope.
